Technical Design Engineer
Woodbridge, ON (On-site) · Full-time · Engineering · Experience: All levels, new grads welcome
The Technical Design Engineer translates customer requirements, sample parts, and rough concepts into production-ready designs that MAS Precision Parts can machine, inspect, and ship. Working directly with the owner-engineer and the shop floor, you will produce CAD models and manufacturing drawings, reverse-engineer components supplied without documentation, and maintain the technical records that support quality and traceability.
This role is open to candidates at all experience levels, including recent graduates. Training is provided, and you will take on independent design work as your competence develops.
What you will do
CAD design and documentation
- Create 3D models and 2D manufacturing drawings in SolidWorks from customer inputs, sketches, sample parts, and legacy prints.
- Apply GD&T and appropriate tolerancing so that parts can be machined and inspected consistently.
- Prepare and maintain bills of materials, material specifications, and revision-controlled drawing packages.
- Keep drawings and engineering records current as designs change through prototype and production.
Reverse engineering and prototyping
- Measure and analyze existing components supplied with little or no documentation.
- Convert physical parts into accurate CAD models suitable for machining, inspection, and future revision.
- Support rapid prototyping and turnkey builds from first concept through first article.
- Contribute to troubleshooting on design and production problems as they surface on the floor.
Design for manufacturing and shop-floor collaboration
- Review designs with machinists and the owner-engineer to confirm workholding, tool access, and machining sequence before release.
- Recommend material selection, stock sizing, and design changes that reduce machining time and cost without compromising function.
- Support the handoff from design to production across CNC milling and turning, Wire EDM, surface and jig grinding, and heat treatment.
- Assist with technical review of customer enquiries at the quote stage and provide manufacturability feedback.
Technical documentation and quality support
- Produce inspection drawings and support first-article inspection (FAI) and non-conformance documentation.
- Maintain drawings, routings, and engineering records within the company's MRP system as it is rolled out.
- Contribute to document control practices as the quality system is aligned to AS9100.
- Identify opportunities for part standardization and better design integration across recurring jobs.
What you bring
- Post-secondary diploma or degree in mechanical engineering, manufacturing engineering technology, mechatronics, or a related discipline (recent graduates welcome to apply).
- Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person granted refugee status.
- Working proficiency in SolidWorks, including part modelling, assemblies, and 2D drawing creation.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, GD&T callouts, and tolerance specifications.
- Familiarity with common machining processes and how they constrain a design.
- Competence with precision measuring instruments (calipers, micrometers, gauges) for reverse engineering and inspection work.
- Clear written and verbal communication; able to explain a design decision to a machinist and to a customer.
- Ability to carry several concurrent design tasks with limited supervision.
Nice to have
- Co-op, internship, or capstone experience in precision machining, tool and die, or job-shop manufacturing.
- Exposure to CAM software such as Mastercam, or to CNC programming and G-code.
- Exposure to ERP or MRP systems, or to ISO 9001 / AS9100 quality systems.
- Experience with 3D scanning, CMM, or other metrology equipment.
- Comfort with spreadsheets, basic SQL, or Power BI for engineering analytics.
- Ontario Class G2 or G driver's licence.
- Russian or Ukrainian language skills.
